In 1993, following the harassment and arrest of a
prominent Kenyan environmental advocate, Prof. Wangari
Maathai, whose grassroots skills have mobilized
thousands of people to oppose the destruction of
Kenya’s forests. Recently, both the Sierra Club and
Amnesty International have joined forces to fight human
